When someone in your town searches “medical store near me” or “best salon near me”, Google shows a small map with three or four businesses. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and it is free. This checklist walks you through setting it up properly from your phone, one step at a time.
Before you start
Keep these things ready. It will save you from stopping halfway.
- A Google account (a Gmail ID) that you will keep for years. Use the owner’s ID, not a staff member’s or a cousin’s.
- Your exact shop or clinic name, as written on your board.
- Your full address with PIN code, and a phone number you answer during working hours.
- Your opening hours for every day of the week.
- 5 to 10 clear photos: the board outside, the inside of the shop, your counter, your products or your work.
Step 1: Check if a profile already exists
Search your business name and town on Google Maps. Sometimes a customer or Google has already created a listing for you. If you see it, tap “Own this business?” or “Claim this business” and follow the steps. Do not make a second profile for the same shop. Duplicates confuse Google and can get both listings in trouble.
If nothing shows up, go to Google Business Profile in your browser or Google Maps app and choose to add your business.
Step 2: Get the basic details right
Business name
Write the name exactly as it appears on your board and bills. Do not add words like “Best”, “Cheapest”, “Mobile Repair Near Me” or your phone number to the name. Google’s guidelines say extra keywords in the name are not allowed and can lead to suspension.
Category
The primary category matters a lot. Google says the categories you choose affect your local ranking. Pick the most specific one that fits, for example “Dental clinic” instead of “Doctor”, or “Beauty salon” instead of “Store”. You cannot create your own category, so scroll the list and pick the closest match. You can add a few extra categories for other things you do, but only if you really do them.
Address or service area
- If customers come to you (shop, clinic, coaching class), show your address.
- If you go to customers (AC repair, plumber, home tuition) and do not serve customers at your address, hide the address and add service areas instead. Google says service areas should be towns, cities or PIN codes, and you can add up to 20.
- If you do both, show the address and add service areas too.
Phone, website and hours
Add a number you actually pick up. If you do not have a website, that is fine, you can skip it for now. Set your regular hours, and later set special hours for Diwali, Eid or other holidays so people do not arrive to a closed shutter.
Step 3: Verify your business
Your profile does not show fully on Google until it is verified. Google decides which verification method you get, and you cannot choose it. The common ones are:
- Video recording. You record a short live video on your phone showing your board, your street or a nearby landmark, the inside of your shop and something that proves you run it, like your keys opening the shutter or your billing counter. Google’s help page says the video must be recorded live (no old videos) and review can take a few working days.
- Phone call or SMS. A code comes to your business number.
- Email. A code or link comes to your business email.
- Live video call with Google support, during your business hours, where available.
- Postcard with a code mailed to your address. This is now less common.
Tips for video verification
- Record in daylight, slowly, without cutting.
- Start outside, show the board and street, then walk in.
- Show proof you are the owner: open the cash drawer, show your billing machine, tools or stock.
- Do not show customers’ faces if you can avoid it.
If the video is rejected, Google tells you why and you can record again. Check in your app, Google changes these methods often.
Step 4: Fill every section
A complete profile gives Google and customers more reasons to choose you.
Description
Write 3 to 5 plain lines about what you do, since when and for whom. For example: “Family-run medical store since 2012. Prescription medicines, baby care and ayurvedic products. Free home delivery within 3 km.” No links, no phone numbers, no ALL CAPS.
Photos
- Logo and a cover photo.
- Outside photo showing the board, so people recognise the shop.
- Inside photos, your team (with their permission) and your products or work.
- Add 2 or 3 new photos every month. Real phone photos are fine. Do not use stock images from the internet.
Products or services
Add your main services or product groups with a short description and, if you are comfortable, a price or “starting from” price. A salon can list haircut, facial and bridal makeup. A coaching class can list Class 10 Maths, Class 12 Science and so on. Availability of the products section depends on your category, so check in your app.
Attributes
Depending on your category, Google may show options like “wheelchair accessible”, “online appointments” or “accepts UPI”. Tick only what is true.
Step 5: Use updates and offers
Google lets many businesses add posts (called updates, offers or events) on the profile. Use them for:
- A festival offer with start and end dates.
- A new product or service.
- A holiday closing notice.
Keep posts short, with one clear photo. Which post types you see can change by country and category, so check in your app, Google changes this often.
Step 6: Reviews and questions
Reviews build trust and help ranking. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and within a few days. Never offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and never post fake ones. We explain the honest way in our guide on getting more Google reviews.
Step 7: A 10-minute monthly check
Once a month, open your profile and check:
- Are hours, phone and address still correct?
- Any new reviews to reply to?
- Any suggested edits from Google or the public? Accept only the correct ones.
- Add 2 or 3 fresh photos.
- Add one update or offer.
- Look at Performance to see calls, direction requests and searches.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Making two profiles for the same shop.
- Using a staff member’s Gmail and losing access later.
- Adding keywords or the town name to the business name when it is not on your board.
- Using a virtual office or a relative’s address where you do not serve customers.
- Uploading blurry photos or photos copied from other websites.
- Forgetting to update hours during festivals.
